The Gay Marriage Thing is a compelling documentary about the politics, the piety and the people embroiled in and affected by the same-sex marriage debate. By focusing on regular Americans on both sides of the issue, this documentary captures what gets lost in most news reports, the human emotions behind the headlines, and in the process, puts a human face on the social struggle of our time

The film introduces us to Gayle and Lorre, thirty-something college sweethearts who recently marked their 15th anniversary. As they wait for May 17, 2004, the first date same-sex couples could file for marriage licenses in Massachusetts, we witness the chaos that swirls around them - from pro- and anti-gay rallies outside the Massachusetts State House to the chambers of State Rep. Kathi-Anne Reinstein - and we see the emotional and spiritual toll it's taking on their lives.

With an array of opinions from church, state, and everyone in between, this is a film that people of all opinions can watch together. The Gay Marriage Thing is designed to foster dialogue and discussion about an issue that deep down affects us all.

    Reviews

“A wonderful and loving documentary… Makes you pay attention to something that other traditional documentaries can’t do: a great story.” – The Anchor

The Gay Marriage Thing...is both important and, at times, powerful.” – Out & About

"That The Gay Marriage Thing is clearly a work of advocacy which can be easily positioned in the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage does nothing to diminish its value as a wholesome reminder of the robust community of interests and aspirations spanning across the (variously porous) borders of sexual orientation, political persuasion, and religious affiliation. It is recommended to all public and academic libraries." - Educational Media Reviews Online

“The film succeeds in bringing a new voice to the chorus of ‘gay marriage’… Higgins does more to empower the need for equal marriage opportunity than you can imagine. With protestors and their colorful signs serving as a Greek chorus, and an array of opinions from church, state and everyone in between, this is the film that family members can finally watch together. It is, as Higgins says, a small story with big implications. And she’s absolutely right.” - Boston Spirit
