Penny Slinger: Out of the Shadows is the untold story of the British artist Penny Slinger and the traumatic events that led to the creation of her masterpiece, the 1977 photo-romance, An Exorcism. A product of the post-war austerity and the subsequent explosion of color that characterized the 1960s counterculture, Slinger embraced her generation’s quest for personal freedom and sexual liberation, and channelled these desires into her ground-breaking art.

Working in photographic collage, Slinger aimed to create her own brand of surrealism, instilling a radical, feminine perspective in her work. In 1969, Slinger published her first book 50% The Visible Woman to critical acclaim—Rolling Stones wrote, “This is a major work – surely to become as ubiquitous as Sergeant Pepper in the culture.” Slinger continued to explore the connection between eroticism, mysticism, and feminism in her collaborations with other artists. In 1972, Slinger worked with acclaimed feminist playwright Jane Arden on the controversial film The Other Side of The Underneath—the only British feature film to have been directed by a woman in the 1970s. Working with Eastern art scholar Nik Douglas, Slinger published Sexual Secrets: The Alchemy of Ecstasy, which is widely considered to be the definitive book on sexuality and Eastern mysticism.

Kovitch documents Slinger’s story for the first time, immersing the viewer in the 1960s counterculture, interviewing her key collaborators, including radical filmmakers Peter Whitehead and Jack Bond. Respected art critics Michael Bracewell and Maxa Zoller contextualize Slinger's extraordinary output, and Turner Nominated artists Jane and Louise Wilson explain why she is finally enjoying long overdue recognition from both the art world and a new generation of artists. Propelled by an original, hypnotic soundtrack by Psychological Strategy Board, Richard Kovitch brings Penny Slinger ‘Out Of The Shadows’ and presenting her work anew for a contemporary audience.
