Part of the No Easy Walk series, this video begins in March 1896 when the Ndebele people of what was then known as Rhodesia rose in armed rebellion against European settlers such as Cecil Rhodes, who had taken over much of their land in the search for gold and other minerals. The First Chimurenga, as it is known to Zimbabweans, ended in defeat and it took another 84 years and a guerilla war in the 1970s before independence was gained.
