This video tells the story of Don Lorenzo Milani, a Catholic priest sent in the Sixties to the small isolated village of Barbiana in Tuscany, where the children of the local peasants and farmer workers had been neglected by the state educational system. On his arrival, Don Lorenzo established a unique school, one that held classes ten hours a day, 365 days a year. Together he and his students read books, mail, and newspapers, discussed everyday problems, the difficulties of life, their relations to the outside world, and also welcomed visitors. The video features archival footage, interviews with former students, parents and supporters of the school (such as filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini), and shows how the experiences transformed the lives of these children.
