Chagas is a disease that affects nearly 20 million people worldwide, kills nearly 50,000 per year, but is practically unknown to the general public.
Filmed in Argentina, the US, and Europe, this documentary gives a voice to those suffering from Chagas, and to those working to find a cure to this disease. Sometimes called "the AIDS of the poor", since its discovery in 1909 Chagas was predicted to go away as living conditions improved in Latin America. But instead the disease lives on, aided by public ignorance, government indifference, and the fact that those afflicted have little access to the media.
Latino immigrants in the US and Europe bring Chagas with them as they seek a better life in a new world, only to be ignored or misunderstood by the medical community. The US and European blood and organ supplies were thought to be exempt from Chagas, but as the film shows this is not the case, and the disease is beginning to affect the First World.
Following the personal stories of those who have been affected by the disease, CHAGAS: A HIDDEN AFFLICTION, examines this problem of social injustice amongst the poor, and the dangers of a spreading disease brought on through globalization and unawareness.

"Chagas deals with the well-known association between the disease and rural poverty but also makes an important contribution vis-a-vis its current globalization... Illuminating." - The Americas
"Like Michael Moore or Morgan Spurlock, but more serious and less sensationalistic... he does it with clarity and talent, in each line of the script, in each image" -Claudio Minghetti of La Nacion
“Chagas, A Hidden Affliction”, by Ricardo Preve would be an excellent candidate for the Best Documentary awards. Its remarkable scientific and teaching merits are complemented by the setting, photography, music, editing and direction, all of them worth the maximum praise. In synthesis, it is a very recommendable movie, specialy for all professionals involved in Medicine."-Dr Osvaldo Dalmasso, General Secretary of the Cardiology Society of Rafaela

“Recommended! The audio and video are excellent! Director Preve takes the viewer along on a multi-country, multi-lingual trip through the Argentine public health system, the World Health Organization, a research facility in France, an MD’s office in the United States, and man-in-the-Parisian-street interviews…” - Educational Media Reviews Online"Chagas deals with the well-known association between the disease and rural poverty but also makes an important contribution vis-a-vis its current globalization...
