One of the most important filmmakers working today, Pedro Costa is the director of the acclaimed "Letters from Fontainhas" trilogy (recently released as a box set by Criterion), which includes Colossal Youth (2006), In Vanda's Room (2000) and Ossos (1997). Ne Change Rien is his luminous exploration of the musical process.
Citing Jean-Luc Godard's Rolling Stones documentary Sympathy for the Devil (One Plus One) as inspiration, Costa constructs a spare, hypnotic portrait of French actress-turned-singer Jeanne Balibar - a mysterious, cigarette-smoking, soulful-eyed chanteuse with an intense devotion to her craft. Costa films his muse in recording studios, endlessly riffing on a melody, in rehearsals with her band, or performing on stage in dimly lit cafes.
With its shimmering black and white photography, chiaroscuro lighting and Balibar's jazz-inflected songs, Ne Change Rien is a film to get lost in. "Both a startling and lucid lesson in filming musical performance and a cinephilic marvel… The sensual, velvety, high-contrast black-and-white images capture the exertions and exultations of music-making…. Costa's film was born under the virtual gaze of three artistic godfathers with original approaches to filming musical performances—Godard, Chris Marker, and Jean-Marie Straub—and, in the course of this bracing, fascinating feature, he conjures them all." - Richard Brody, The New Yorker
* Official Selection, New York Film Festival, 2009
“Something between a portrait and a performance doc, Ne Change Rien is entrancing…. The cinematography is stunning and beyond atmospheric. The music is highly intelligent and the structure is totally musical.” – J. Hoberman, Village Voice
“Captivating! By the end, you feel curiously closer to the performer and her process without having any clue how you got there. It’s exhilarating.” – Time Out New York
" Highly Recommended . Ne Change Rien is as fascinating a window into filmmaking as it is into music... This is a quiet masterpiece of filmmaking, clearly evocative of the best of the French New Wave". - Library Journal
“An insightful snapshot of the creative process itself”. – Video Librarian
