What happens to female artists once they become mothers? A heartfelt exploration of how motherhood affects and impinges on one's creative life, Come Worry With Us! follows violinist Jessica Moss and singer/guitarist Efrim Menuck, members of internationally acclaimed Montreal-based band Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra (Menuck is also a founding member of Godspeed You! Black Emperor), as the couple decides to bring their young son on tour and attempts to balance family and career.

Moss and Menuck, and their band, are one of a growing number of musicians who have accepted an infant (Efrim and Jessica's son, Ezra) into their touring life. Making a living has never been more difficult for musicians: a downloading generation has shattered the economics of the music industry, and constant touring has become synonymous with economic survival. Touring with children is both costly and complicated, yet Jessica and Efrim, and fellow band mates Sophie Trudeau, Thierry Amar and Dave Payant, are determined to combine family life and being on the road with the band's deep political commitment. As SMZ perseveres in making art and an honest living, we follow Jessica as she discovers the parallel path that mothers can find themselves on while attempting to pursue artistic endeavors alongside their peers.

With footage of Thee Silver Mount Zion performing live on their North American tour, Come Worry With Us! depicts the increasingly complex personal choices musicians - and especially women - have to make in times where constant touring has become synonymous with economic survival.

    Reviews

"It is this focus [motherhood] that makes Come Worry With Us! all but revolutionary in the music-doc genre. For while the concert performances and tour bus antics remain, this is no Cocksucker Blues expose—the centre of the film is a toddler, Ezra.” - POV Magazine

"A poignant documentary that will interest not only Thee Silver Mt. Zion fans, but music aficionados and parents interested in the challenges of balancing family with a passion for the arts." - The Georgia Straight

"Come Worry with Usshows women getting together to discuss these issues, and hopefully can catalyze a broader conversation about women aging, trying to make a living from creative work, and having kids. Ultimately, this conversation is not just exclusive to women, as women’s issues need to be on the radar for everyone, and the struggle to make a living from creative work is touching broader and broader swathes of the population. Every day we’re worrying, so come hustle with us.”- Miranda Campbell, Writer and Professor of English, Dawson College, Montreal

"I haven't seen a better film about women in rock, and I've never seen a film about motherhood and the challenges of life as as working musician. Come Worry With Us! is completely original in this regard. Addressing the current state of the music industry and the uncomfortable truths about the working poor in the arts, it is an honest and unadorned portrait of parenthood as well as an important document of one Canada’s most vital and unique musical collectives." - Michael Baker (Centre for Cinema Studies, University of British Columbia), author of the forthcoming book “Rockumentary: An Incomplete History of the Popular Music Documentary”

Highly Recommended. This film interweaves current issues of labor, the music industry, gender roles, politics, parenthood, and family life into an appealing storyline. For those interested more in the musical aspects of the film, there is excellent footage of a touring band and great performance documentation. Viewers will also come away with a better understanding of SMZ’s aesthetic, ethics, and close personal relationships. Come Worry With Us! is recommended for music libraries at academic institutions with subject interest in popular music and would make an excellent addition to women’s and gender studies film collections . “ - Educational Media Reviews Online
