SHEPHERD'S PIE AND SUSHI

In 1993, Mieko Ouchi, a half-white, half-Japanese actress, began researching a documentary about her Japanese immigrant grandfather. Shortly thereafter, she was cast to star in The War Between Us, a feature film on the WWII internment of Japanese-North Americans, thus re-enacting a key episode in her own community's history. Part Japanese immigrant history, part autobiography and family chronicle, this video examines complex questions of personal and cultural identity. Using archival material, dramatic re- enactment, scenes from The War Between Us, and moving interviews with members of the Ouchi family, the video relates the early history of Japanese immigrants to North America and looks at Mieko's and her family's struggles with their own identities.
