    This collection of early films by Brazilian artist and filmmaker Ana Vaz proposes a critical reflection on the relationship between colonialism, modernity and the impending ecological disaster. From Sacris Pulso (2007) to Amérika: Bahía de las Flechas (2016), the selection traces the development of her distinctively “embodied” cinema. With an emphasis on the materiality of analogue film, Vaz proposes film as a physical experience, extending the notion of corporeal cinema onto film’s very own body. Hers is a haptic filmmaking that destabilises and questions the hierarchical gaze of ethnographic cinema, highlighting the instability of perspective as well as the presences before and behind the camera. At the core of the collection is a cycle of works that explore the colonial and post-colonial exchange between Europe and the Americas. It was initiated with A Idade da Pedra (2013), a film that blurs the untenable distinction between architecture and geology in the Anthropocene whilst revisiting Brazil’s history from its colonial and modernist phases to a speculative future.

    About ANA VAZ

    Ana Vaz (1986, Brasília) is an artist and filmmaker whose films, installations and performed texts explore complex relationships between environments, territories and hybrid histories pushing the boundaries of our perception. Her films have been showed internationally in film festivals and institutions such as the Tate Modern, Palais de Tokyo, Jeu de Paume, LUX Moving Images, New York Film Festival - Projections, TIFF Wavelengths, BFI, Cinéma du Réel, TABAKALERA, Courtisane, Fondación Tapiès and Whitechapel Gallery. Recent exhibitions include "The Voyage Out" at LUX Moving Images (London), "The Voyage Out: Mediums" at Centre d'Art Ange Leccia (Oletta, Corsica), "Eco-visionaries" at MAAT (Portugal), "What are the Clouds?" at WKV Stuttgart and Videobrasil at SESC Pompéia (Brazil). Ana is also a founding member of the collective COYOTE along with Tristan Bera, Nuno da Luz, Elida Hoëg and Clémence Seurat, a cross-disciplinary group working in the fields of ecology, ethnology and political science through an array of cross-cutting platforms. In 2015, she was the recipient of the Kazuko Trust Award presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in recognition of artistic excellence and innovation in her moving-image work.
